Pear Crisp Recipe

Prep Time: 20 mins

Cooking Time: 40 mins

Total Time: 1 hr

Ingredients
For Pear
  • 600 g ripe pears (cut, cored and cubed into 1-2 cm pieces. Also, the sweeter the pears, the lesser the sugar goes into it, adding the fruitiest flavor and richness to the dish)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
For Crisp Topping
  • 150 grams (1 cup) almond flour (you may use all-purpose flour if not allergic to gluten)
  • 50 grams (1/2 cup) whole rolled oats
  • 100 grams (1/2 cup) brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 125 grams (1/2 cup) cold unsalted butter (cut into 1 inch cubes. Use vegan butter like coconut or oat butter if you are allergic to dairy products)
  • 50 grams chopped pecans (Optional. If you are allergic to nuts, kindly skip this. Other options could be chocolate chips, especially if making the recipe for kids)

How to make Pear Crisp with Oatmeal:
  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F) and line a 9X10 inch baking dish.
  2. Put the cubed pears into a medium sized bowl, and sprinkle the lemon juice and cornstarch on top. Mix to combine well. The cornstarch would help thicken the pear juices. However, if you want to make the recipe without it for some reason, it works fine. Only the juices might be slightly more runny.
  3. Now, spread the pear mixture onto your prepared baking dish and set aside.
  4. Time to make the crumble now. Add flour, oats, brown sugar and salt to a medium bowl. (Also, add chopped nuts/chocolate chips along, if using in the recipe)
  5. Add the butter to the mixture, and work it in using a fork until thoroughly combined like a sand-like texture.  However, it should still clump together slightly.
  6. Spread the crumble mixture evenly on top of the fruit with your fingers, breaking up the larger clumps carefully. Bake it for around 40-45 minutes. The edges will be bubbly and the top will become a beautiful golden brown crisp-like. Let the crumble cool for several minutes before serving.
  7. Enjoy warm, with a serving of vanilla ice cream.

Cooking Instructions

How to Make Vanilla Ice-Cream at Home:

  1. Combine the milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt in a medium saucepan. Warm over medium-low heat, whisking often until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is warmed. This will take around 5 minutes.
  2. Pour the warmed up mixture into a heatproof bowl. Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  3. Now, take out the chilled ice cream base from the fridge and whisk well. Churn in an ice cream maker according to the instructions of the brand (typically 20 to 30 minutes). The ice cream will be soft and smooth after churning. To firm up the ice cream, transfer it to an airtight container and freeze for 2 to 4 hours before serving.
  4. Let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften before serving or use a hot scoop (dipped in hot water) to scoop it out easily.
